Where will they stop? Will they ever stop?
If we the taxpayers must back the automotive bailout . . . then before the automotive companies can get one penny there should be something in it for the American people, besides higher taxes.
RE-ESTABLISHING AMERICAS MANUFACTURING
One stipulation should be . . . for both the government and the automotive companies to take the roles of initiating programs that help entrepreneurs acquire the start up capital to open manufacturing businesses in and around the mid-west, and then guaranteeing to provide them with enough work to help regrow our manufacturing/supply chain and its infrastructure for the United States. Manufacturing creates good paying highly skilled jobs, of which helps to create buyers for cars in the American market. Manufacturing is also part of our nations National Security, for making our own weapons and military supplies. Last manufacturing is needed for developing new technology.
UAW CONCESSION/BUYOUT SUGGESTION
Another idea is to make efforts, that allow automotive companies to set up a 5 year concession/buyout program for each UAW member, by converting 50% of their living wages into stocks that are equal to three times their concession value. Workers can cash out these stocks at anytime thereafter to supplement their lost income . . . After the 5 year period is over– further employment and benefits with GM, Ford or Chrysler ends. They can be re-hired at rates that are competitive with non-union plants, like Toyota.
One respondent to this suggestion wrote:
We absolutely need to re-establish our manufacturing base, and the auto companies should take the lead. Make them work off that loan in more than just monetary terms . . . As well, the domestic car makers have long been held hostage by the UAW. What used to be a force for worker rights, safety, and FAIR pay, has turned into a politicized extortionist organization. The UAW needs to either go, or take merely a role as ‘monitor’ as to the wellness of the workforce.
