Video on mobile handsets will take off with the upcoming initiatives from Adobe. Called Adobe Flash Lite, Flash videos will be published and viewed on a number of mobile devices.
To further extend the reach of Flash viewing, phones will have chips that allow them show these files. On2 Technologies, whose encoding software is part of Flash ecosystem, is finalizing the acquisition of Hantro of Finland. The Finnish concern implements video compression for numerous handset makers including Nokia, Sanyo and others.
On2 TrueMotion VP7 – Truemobile VP7 coming after Hantro
Perhaps the world’s most advanced video compression technology, award-winning On2 VP7 can be experienced in Skype 2.0, AOL AIM, Move Networks, Triton, Viewpoint Media Player, and Tencent Messenger/QQ, among others.
VP7 is designed to encode quicker, decode in fewer cycles, and with less decoding complexity than other compression schemes, making VP7 the ideal choice for high volume applications and low cost mass market consumer devices.
On2 VP7 is optimized for playback on low-power chipsets and includes advanced buffering and latency features.
VP7 is used for PC, Video On Demand, High Definition video, and mobile video applications. It provides high quality video at data rates from dial-up to high-definition.
VP7 is coming to mobile soon in On2’s TrueMobile mobile video system, currently under trials with various mobile operators. VP7 also makes high definition video possible for web applications.
Features (Pay close attention)
Delivers high-quality video at data rates as low as 20Kbps
Advanced datarate control
Optimized for real-time video compression–encodes full D1 resolution in realtime
Compresses high-definition (HD) material with no restrictions on the encoder. VP7 can play back 1920×1080 HD material on a 2.5 GHz PC and 1280×720 material on a 1.5 GHz PC
Advanced post-processing controls for improved playback
Powerful SDKs and binaries available for Windows, MacOS X, Linux, and embedded chipsets such as ARM and TI C64x.
Drastically reduces ringing artifacts (mosquito-like noise around sharp edges)
Supports AVI, MPEG input formats
Supports multi-pass encoding
Special video conferencing, mobile, and dropped-packet features
Supports Video for Windows (VFW) and Microsoft Direct Show
Excellent animation compression
Straightforward licensing terms (royalty-free solutions available)
Carries no burdensome patent pooling restrictions or external licensing fees
Purely software-based solution that can be upgraded easily
On2 TrueMobile itself has been tested and approved on China Mobile’s 2.5G mobile video network.
On2 TrueMobile video streams with very low latency over HTTP and can also play files stored on the device (e.g., a media card).
“Web video publishers are recognizing that On2 VP6™ Flash video is a leader in quality and flexibility when distributing their video to millions of users around the world,” said Bill Wheaton, Vice President of Digital Media at Akamai. “Akamai’s globally distributed platform provides the high-availability infrastructure that video distribution demands. Making On2’s Flix Publisher available to our customers gives them a powerful tool for joining the social media revolution, and levels the playing field for large and small publishers alike to take advantage of the tremendous demand for Flash video.”
