BOSTON (AP)–Philip Morris USA, the nation’s largest cigarette maker, has
provided millions of dollars for scientific research at several Massachusetts
colleges and universities in recent years.
The grants supported research on medical conditions such as heart disease and
cancer that are linked to smoking.
Philip Morris said scientists are required to disclose the source of the funding
and the company doesn’t interfere with the research.
Boston University Medical School said the institution has received nearly $4
million from Philip Morris to study tobacco-related diseases. The school’s
provost, Dr. Karen Antman, said researchers adhere to the “highest ethical
conduct.”
The Boston Globe reported in its Monday edition that Harvard University,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Massachusetts have
also received grants from the tobacco-maker since 2000.
Philip Morris is a unit of Altra Group Inc. (MO).
