They are selling a Blu-Ray player that also plays games.  They don’t have enough real titles and their online game system can’t come close to XBOX Live.  XBOX has a ton more games and their online community is the most solid around.

As for the RED-RIng of Death problems those have been fixed and even when i went through it, yes it sucked being out for a month but the new one i got had the HDMI upconvert on it and they sent me a free month of online play as well.  They handled it like professionals even though, they had to or face law suits, but all in all i was impressed. Not sure i believe the out of stock excuse because i always see them in Best Buy but i guess in some parts it is possible.

Back to the Blu-Ray argument.  Sony has made huge pushes to raise Blu-Ray to the top of the HD format War and it looks like it is almost over.   So if you are going to buy a Blu-ray for $400 anyway why not buy the Playstation and play games as well, plus you get the  five free movies too.  If Microsoft had really wanted to make it interesting they should have installed a HD player in the XBOX standard as well.  (They have an add on for the now low price of $150)  But if they had that from the start this war might only be getting started and I believe that with the game titles and online system they have Sony would be in a distant 4th even behind playing Hearts on Yahoo.

“Sales of video game software for North America rose 11% to $610.6 million for the month of January, according to figures from the NPD Group released late Thursday.

The results surprised analysts, who were predicting a drop in sales compared to the same period last year - which had benefited from having an extra week in the period. “

Wall Street analysts covering the video game sector had predicted on average a decline of 7% from last year, according to MarketWatch calculations.

The PlayStation 3 also surprised, selling about 269,000 units for the month and coming second only to the mega-popular Nintendo Wii, which moved about 274,000 units.

It was a notable performance for the PS3, which rang up largely disappointing sales following its debut in November of 2006. The original versions of the console cost $600 and suffered from the lack of compelling game titles available for the device. “
