Citigroup has begun big layoffs and is expected to cut at least 10,000 jobs around the globe, a published report said Friday.
Citi’s global staff stands at about 352,000 now, and the firm has a target to trim that to about 290,000 by next year, the report said, citing a person familiar with the company’s plans.
In October, American Express announced major layoffs, unveiling plans to slash 7,000 jobs.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company said in a statement that it will lay off between 15%-18% of its work force - about 5,000-6,000 workers - in a move to save as much as $800 million a year.
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — First-time filings for state unemployment benefits hit their highest level since September 2001, rising to 516,000 in the latest week, a further sign of how the U.S. labor market’s struggling, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

As employees are handed pink slips, an employer like a bank or a brokerage (Citi, AmEx) may be prudent to retain their e-mail records.
